SEO basics for your start-up

If you’re planning to set up a new business, getting your name known will be a key consideration in your business plan.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is becoming ever more important. Everyone wants to be at the top of a google search, but how do you do this?!

Here are some simple tips to get you started:

Choose your website carefully
When looking to set up your website be mindful of SEO. Make sure your provider is SEO-focused and has tools in place to help you optimise your website and improve your search ranking.

Key word optimisation

Is your website keyword optimised? It’s important to use the right keywords throughout your website. Google uses keywords to know what your website is about and so the more relevant the key words are to your website and business profile the better.

Conducting a key word research exercise is a good start.

Content strategy
The content you write needs to be of good quality and interesting to your audience. Never copy content from another website though; Google can detect this and will penalise your site accordingly.

It is also good to post content regularly and consistently. Google likes to see your website is active.

Offsite activity / link building
Remember that your website is not the only way of promoting yourself. Link building from other websites helps to improve your SEO ranking. Social media is a great way of increasing SEO for your website, as are online reviews and backlinks. These are all strong indicators to search engines that your website is trustworthy.
